Book The Space Trilogy, Omnib: Three Science Fiction Classics in One Volume: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, That Hideous Strength Review :

I am a big fan of C.S. Lewis's works (fiction and non-fiction), but I had never read the Space Trilogy until now because I wasn't a fan of science fiction until more recently. I posted a review of the three books in the trilogy on Goodreads as I finished each book. This is a compilation of all three reviews of those reviews.About "Out of the Silent Planet"I am really starting to enjoy and embrace to genre of science fiction, and I also appreciate Lewis's unique take on the genre in this work. I especially love that the main character, Ransom, is a philologist (or linguist) who quickly learns the language on an alien planet. As usual, Lewis's writing goes much deeper than just the plot of the story. Philosophically, he brings up a lot of questions about intelligent life and the idea of beings having a soul. One of my favorite aspects of the story is the way Ransom changes his perspective of the creatures he meets as he becomes more familiar with them. His responses move from repulsion to endearment perhaps even to love. At one poignant moment, he even begins to see his own race through the eyes of the aliens, but I won't say more than that because I don't want to give spoilers.About "Perelandra"I LOVED reading this second book in The Space Trilogy. I finished it last night, but I couldn't begin to put into words my thoughts about the book at the time. I'm still not sure I can! This is one of the richest and most beautiful descriptive and philosophical fictional works I've ever experienced. Lewis is a master at weaving together story and Truth, and he does it in this work like nothing I've ever read. I love the descriptive passages about the world of Perelandra and the beautiful surprises that Ransom experiences at each turn. There is a literally out-of-this-world purity to Perelandra that Lewis creates, and it was a happy task to try to imagine such a place. The book is not without conflict and adventure, but the thought-provoking nature of the story was what really captured my heart. I found myself highlighting nearly every other line in some parts. The good vs. evil thematic element is boldly and yet subtly present at every turn in the story, and the reflections on Christianity are truly profound. One of my favorite parts is when Ransom encounters the eldila again and looks on them in a physical form. It is gave me a new image and guess at what the biblical encounters with angels might have been like. There is more I could write, but I don't want to give away plot details or any major spoilers. Needless to say, I loved this entire book, and I can't wait to finish the series!About "That Hideous Strength"Wow. What to say? This is one of the most intellectually challenging books I've read in a long time, and it was a great story to boot! C.S. Lewis was truly a man of great learning and intellect who knew how to weave philosophy and worldview into every piece of his writing, even the most exciting fiction/fantasy/sci-fi novel (which this book is)."That Hideous Strength" is so different from the first two novels in the series; each book stands alone as a unique and captivating work in its own genre, but read in sequence, all three books are even more powerful. "That Hideous Strength" reminded me a bit of Chesterton's "The Man Who Was Thursday" with its secretive and conspiratorial plot elements and because of its complexity of language. The story captivated me from page one, and many of the characters (especially the main two--husband and wife) were deeply complex and realistic.Knowing and agreeing with Lewis's biblical worldview, I found myself deeply entrenched in trying to figure out how his views work themselves out in a science fiction work like this one. I'm not sure that I am brave or wise enough to share my analysis of that element of the story, so I will simply say that reading this work of fiction made me grow in my real-life understanding of the universe and of God.Also, having read many of Lewis's other works, I enjoyed catching a phrase here or an idea there that reminded me of something else he had written. I am glad to have added this book and the rest of The Space Trilogy to the list of Lewis's works that I've read. This book is not for the faint of heart; it is compelling and confusing and deep and gory (at times) and magnificently and overwhelmingly beautiful.
C S Lewis' The Space Trilogy consists of Out of A Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. Each offering places Professor Ransom as the main character. The first book takes place on Mars with Ransom kidnapped and taken to Mars, After he escapes, he wanders Mars, meets natives, and learns that Earth has been exiled from the rest of the community of beings that oversee each planet. In Perelandra, he is transported to Venus when nascent humanoid life is just emerging. He and his nemesis from Mars take on a philosophical battle of wits in a sort of good versus evil for the fledgling intelligence. In the end, he murders his nemesis. In the final installment, followers of his nemesis on Earth hatch a plot to release and co-opt demonic entities to take over the planet. Ransom marshals a hodge-podge of forces included a resurrected Merlin to battle the evil forces. While the trilogy starts strong with some intriguing sci-fi regarding Mars, space travel, and alien intelligence as well as higher order entities, the Venus is largely philosophical musings, and the final installment (which is longer than the first two combined) is simply a story with little cohesion or rationale where things just happen with bad people doing evil things and good people trying and it all works out in the end.
